What Is the Time for Kids Independent Reading Activity?
Each unit in the textbook ends with a short article from Time for Kids. This story will not be read in the classroom, but instead assigned as a homework activity. The students will be required to read the article independently at home and complete all practice book pages for the selection. When the student feels confident with their reading of the article, he or she should turn the completed practice book and checklist into the teacher and ask for the Time for Kids selection test. The practice book and checklist must be turned in and the selection test must be taken before the unit test is given. An approximate date for the unit test will be given, and a due date for the Time for Kids Independent Reading Activity will be assigned to a date about one week before the unit test.
| Estimated Due Dates (2005-2006) |
| Unit 1 | October 25, 2005 |
| Unit 2 | January 5, 2006 |
| Unit 3 | March 6, 2006 |
| Unit 4 | May 8, 2005 |
| * These dates are only estimates and subject to change. The activities will not be due before the dates listed above, but may be pushed back due to changes or irregularities in the school schedule. |

Will There Be Book Reports?
No. Book reports will not be assigned in the literature half of the reading classroom. With this being the first year of implementation of the writing instruction module, we feel that we are exploring enough of new concepts (journals and the reading record) to stimulate the study of reading. The use of book reports will be assessed at the end of this year after seeing how the writing instruction evolves.
