What Will Happen in the Literature Classroom?

The literature classroom will follow a five day schedule. The first day students will complete an introductory lesson that will introduce the students to the focal comprehension skill and theme of the main selection. A practice book page about the focal comprehension skill will be completed. The students will read the main selection on the second day. There is a story comprehension practice book page that may be completed. On the third day, the students will complete four practice book pages reviewing the focal comprehension skill and other comprehension skills. The fourth day the students will read in small groups a story that has a similiar theme to the main selection. Their written answers to five questions about the story will be graded. On the fifth day, the students will take a ten question comprehension test where they may use their textbooks. After the test, they will complete the vocabulary and the two vocabulary practive books pages for the next main selection.

Why Can the Students Use Their Textbooks on the Test?

The tests are used to evaluate how well the students are comprehending, not memorizing, the text that they are reading. By allowing the students to look through the story during a test, we are asking them to show how well they are able to read and understand what they are reading compared to the choices given to them on the test.

What Is the Time for Kids Independent Reading Activity?

Each unit in the textbook ends with a short article from Time for Kids. This story will not be read in the classroom, but instead assigned as a homework activity. The students will be required to read the article independently at home and complete all practice book pages for the selection. When the student feels confident with their reading of the article, he or she should turn the completed practice book and checklist into the teacher and ask for the Time for Kids selection test. The practice book and checklist must be turned in and the selection test must be taken before the unit test is given. An approximate date for the unit test will be given, and a due date for the Time for Kids Independent Reading Activity will be assigned to a date about one week before the unit test.

Estimated Due Dates (2005-2006)
Unit 1October 25, 2005
Unit 2January 5, 2006
Unit 3March 6, 2006
Unit 4May 8, 2005
* These dates are only estimates and subject to change. The activities will not be due before the dates listed above, but may be pushed back due to changes or irregularities in the school schedule.

Will There Be Book Reports?

No. Book reports will not be assigned in the literature half of the reading classroom. With this being the first year of implementation of the writing instruction module, we feel that we are exploring enough of new concepts (journals and the reading record) to stimulate the study of reading. The use of book reports will be assessed at the end of this year after seeing how the writing instruction evolves.
